A new danger threatens the inhabitants of camps in Northern Syria where snakes and scorpions abound

A new danger threatens the inhabitants of camps in Northern Syria.

The child « Hussam », 12 years old, from a residential camp in Al-Bardaghli area in the northern countryside of Idlib, was stung by a poisonous scorpion yesterday while playing with a number of children near their place of residence

Where he was taken to the nearest medical point in the area to receive first aid and the necessary treatment, the child’s mother says: « She was surprised by her son’s screams and the crying of children around him while he was spending his time playing between the stones near their tent, where the child was stung by a poisonous scorpion. »

Similar incidents are frequent among residents in northwestern Syria from time to time, especially with the high temperatures, where the danger of snakes and scorpions that emerge from their burrows and take refuge in damp places near homes and camps increases, posing a threat to the lives of civilians, especially in agricultural lands, mountainous areas and extremist camps.

The people of mountainous areas, villagers in remote places, and many residents of extremist informal camps are also living in a state of constant anxiety that they are exposed to the danger of insects, scorpions and poisonous snakes that infiltrate greatly in the summer and enter tents whenever temperatures rise, without the ability to find permanent solutions other than continuous caution.

In addition, parents are taking preventive measures such as spraying pesticides inside their tents as a means of preventing poisonous insects, although they acknowledge that they are not enough to completely eliminate them, but rather temporary solutions they apply to rid their children and families of the dangers of these insects.

In a previous interview with Ziad Abboud, a volunteer in the Civil Defense, he confirmed to the SY24 platform that the rise of temperatures in this period activate the exit of scorpions and snakes from their burrows, so people should pay attention and beware of them, with the need to keep garbage away from residential communities, maintain the cleanliness of homes and tents and clean their surroundings constantly to prevent the spread of reptiles and insects.

It is noteworthy that the camps in northern Syria were built randomly as an emergency response to accommodate the displaced people from their towns in the past years, as they are not eligible for permanent housing, and lack the most basic necessities of life, but the war prompted hundreds of thousands of families to reside in them years ago, hoping to return to their homes as soon as possible.
